Project Proposal
Financial support from the CHS Foundation will pay for park admission and entry fees for three CHS choirs to participate in the Worlds of Fun Festival of Music.
Amount Funded: $2,800
“Performing for adjudicators is always a growing experience. Students interacted with three different highly accomplished judges who broadened their understanding and introduced new techniques and concepts in choral music. The students performed beautifully, and CHS Singers even placed second in the Large High School division – an impressive feat! But additionally, spending an afternoon with friends at Worlds of Fun is a formative experience for many teens, and one that strengthens social skills and promotes personal growth.”

Commitment to Closing the Opportunity Gap
The focus of this trip was to participate in a vocal clinic followed by a performance at the festival. Both the clinic and performance result in constructive feedback from nationally renowned judges from the collegiate realm. “This is a unique learning experience and one we surely grew from,” says Ms. Sara Cowan, CHS vocal music teacher. “However, I think kids having fun with their friends at an amusement park is incredibly valuable, and not an experience that’s available to every Central student due to a variety of circumstances. For many students, this was their first time in a place like this.”
Translation to College and Career Readiness
The three choirs (Bel Canto, A Cappella, and CHS Singers) received verbal and written feedback on their performances from college professors, and each choir participated in a clinic with one of the judges. Students learned new techniques for tuning, breath connection, phrase shaping, and more. All these skills are just a part of the learning and performance process which will help students prepare for future vocal classes, concerts, and competitions.
“We received the opportunity to meet with collegiate-level clinicians, which really improved our technique, and we gained valuable insight. Thank you CHS Foundation for this experience!”
