Project Proposal
Central High English teachers seek to further create meaningful experiences for their students by incorporating performing arts events into the traditional curriculum. Attending these performances highlights and emphasizes the enduring importance and interconnectedness of literature, performing arts, and community.
Amount Funded
$385
“I am so grateful to the Foundation for helping me incorporate performing arts into our traditional curriculum. Currently my students are reading The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet. Following the Nai Ni Chen Dance performance, we read “The Butterfly Lovers”, a story similar to Shakespeare’s classic play, that originated in the Eastern Jin dynasty in China which tells a similar story of star-crossed lovers. Attending this performance allowed me to broaden my students’ world view and make meaningful connections between the texts and the world today.”
Ms. Martha Omar, CHS English Teacher
Students Impacted

Commitment to Closing the Opportunity Gap
By providing funds for freshmen from diverse backgrounds, the Foundation ensures that financial constraints do not hinder students’ access to cultural experiences offered in the local area. Attending the Nai Ni Chen performance is an enriching opportunity that exposes students to a unique part of Chinese culture and strengthens their sense of community.
Translation to College and Career Readiness
The performing arts can have long-lasting effects on students’ personal and academic development. By providing this opportunity early in their high school journey, Central English teachers along with the Foundation set a precedent for continued engagement with the arts and community involvement, potentially influencing the students’ future educational and career paths.
“The dancing was so amazing! As a dancer myself, I am inspired by this art form that tells stories that everyone can relate to.”
