Project Proposal
The following support of experiential learning opportunities will provide Central students greater access to applied science. Goals for this grant include the following:
- Continued maintenance and care of the marine biology saltwater aquarium purchased in the previous grant cycle. The reef aquarium system is used in Marine Biology, Ecology, and in the Advanced Research classes.
- The tanks provide an opportunity for students to test hypotheses and carry out experiments on the interactions in the marine ecosystem.
- The tanks require regular maintenance and care, and it is anticipated that some equipment and parts purchased in 2016 will need to be replaced in the next 2-3 years.
“The addition of classroom aquariums with the help of the CHS Foundation has enhanced the classroom environment for all students (and visitors) both those in the classes and those who just stop by to look at the marine life. From learning essential chemistry to keep our 240-gallon reef system thriving, to charting how increased carbon in the environment can acidify the system, students learn about critical interactions between aquatic life and humans. The calming presence that these tanks bring to the learning environment also has a positive impact on the mental health of our students. Many seek out the tanks when they enter the room to check on their favorite critters, while others gravitate toward them during transition time in class. We thank the Foundation for providing this transformational addition to our science learning environment.”

Students Impacted
61 students in science classes with instruction connected to the marine life. In addition, approximately 200 students attend classes in the room with the marine and freshwater aquarium tanks. Being in the room itself, even if it is not an Ecology, Marine Biology, or Research class gives students an opportunity to experience some unique wildlife in an ecosystem not found in Nebraska.
Commitment to Closing the Opportunity Gap
Allows for hands-on learning and high-level research that most students would not have access to in a high school classroom. Research students can complete projects that match zoo academy student projects through use of the tanks.
Translation to College and Career Readiness
Hands-on learning gives students the opportunity to experience real-world situations. Activities where students are using special equipment to demonstrate concepts teaches life skills such as accountability, problem-solving, cooperation, and communication. The tanks help to create a comfortable environment conducive to learning often alleviating anxiety that some students experience in their day-to-day lives.
“Being allowed hands-on interaction with the tanks and their inhabitants, such as conducting water tests and feeding the fish and seahorses has given us a real-world example to look at as we learn about the process of conducting long-term research.”
