Support from the CHS Foundation will provide ELL staff with the funds necessary to purchase materials and participate in events to enhance the language-acquisition lessons already embedded in the school day to maximize all students’ academic progress and build the confidence needed to fully engage in their school and neighborhood communities.
Commitment to Closing the Opportunity Gap
The English Learners from CHS traveled via the MAT bus to the Digital Express at Metropolitan Community College. Riding the city bus was a first-time experience for some of the participants, and in the future, they will be more confident to ride by themselves and help members of their family use the city bus system. The end-result of the day was a strong connection with a college campus that not only provides an opportunity learn about technology devices such as gaming consoles, Cricut cutting machines, Raspberry Pi’s, robots, 3-D printers and a host of other devices, but also offers small meeting rooms, computer loaner programs, and a place to print, fax or scan documents.
Translation to College and Career Readiness
Some of the students will begin their college careers at Metro, and this was a way to introduce them to a resource they could share with their families. If they opt to explore a college degree after graduation, this opportunity serves as another means to introduce them to one of several areas of study offered at a college campus, specifically the wide array of career possibilities that technology classes offer.
