“The foundational skills taught in our classroom allow students to function more independently at home and in the community and prepare students for employment, community integration, and personal fulfillment. These items will help make this possible.Because of the support from the CHS Foundation, we are now even more equipped to help them meet their goals. The students are excited to cook a full Thanksgiving meal next school year prior to the holiday break!”

Commitment to Closing the Opportunity Gap
Teachers in the ACP classroom will now be able to teach cooking skills to their students who struggle in the larger kitchen setting but still benefit from learning valuable skills like following a recipe, cutting, mixing, and using a microwave. Learning skills like cooking, cleaning, hygiene, and other valuable work and life skills helps increase independence and self-sufficiency while also preparing students for future transitions. like this.”
Translation to College and Career Readiness
Daily living and life skills activities are important to both the academic and personal growth of Central’s ACP students. They prepare the students for challenges and responsibilities outside of the classroom through the development of social and communication skills, independence in daily living, vocation skills, and job readiness. All of these experiences in the classroom help prepare students to become as independent and self-sufficient as possible both during and after high school.
“I would like to learn how to make a pie. My mom is a baker, and I want to learn to bake like her. I am excited that we got new cooking things like this pie pan!”
