Vera Chandler Foster graduated from Central at age 15 as a member of the National Honor Society. She then graduated from Fisk University cum laude and went on to earn master’s degrees from both the University of Nebraska and Chicago University. Her husband Luther was President of aTuckegee Institute for 28 years, and she was the university’s first lady. During that period she served patients of the Tuskegee Veterans Hospital as a psychiatric social worker. Her motto has always been “Service to others.” Vera has been a national board member of several organizations including the YMCA, Common Cause, and Planned Parenthood.
Vera passed away in 2001 at the age of 85.
