Peter Kiewit, at 20 years of age, assumed management of the local construction firm founded by his grandfather in 1884 and built it into one of the world’s largest construction and mining enterprises. Landmarks such as Joslyn Museum and the Nebraska State Capitol are the structural heritage of Pete Kiewit , the builder. He purchased the Omaha World-Herald to preserve it as a locally owned and operated newspaper. Under his direction the Kiewit enterprises, including the World-Herald, became employee-owned businesses. As a civic and philanthropic leader, he created The Kiewit Foundation which continues as the largest private charitable foundation in Nebraska.
Peter passed away in 1979 at the age of 78.
