While at Central, Howard Kennedy IV achieved success in a number of school activities, including baseball, winning the city’s batting championship in both his junior and senior years, and in drama and vocal music, playing the lead role of Billy Bigelow in the school musical, Carousel. Howard attended the University of Iowa where he was the captain of the baseball team and held a major leadership role as a cadet in the university’s ROTC program. After graduating with a degree in speech and dramatic arts, Howard served in the U.S. Army as a 2nd lieutenant before beginning his broadcasting career. He held a number in positions of radio and television broadcasting, including DJ, TV host and director, station manager, and general manager. His career took him to various cities, and, eventually, to Omaha where he became KMTV’s general manager. During his broadcasting career, Howard served as the president of the CBS Affiliates Board, a prominent national position, and as president of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association. Among his many honors, Howard received the Distinguished Broadcaster of the Year Award from UNL, and he is a member of the Nebraska Broadcasters Association Hall of Fame. In addition to his distinguished broadcasting career, Howard has given much time and energy to his hometown community by serving on several boards, including the Urban League, Opera Omaha, United Way, the Omaha Chamber of Commerce, the Wellness Council of the Midlands, Lauritzen Gardens, the College World Series Board, and as a trustee of Dundee Presbyterian Church.
