Edward Zorinsky was elected to the United States Senate in 1976 and re-elected in 1982. One of his favorite sayings was “There are to many Democrat and Republican senators; what we need are more United States Senators.” Upon his death in 1987, President Reagan eulogized his as “a true public servant.” After graduation from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, he was engaged in his family’s wholesale tobacco and candy business and rose to the rank of Captain in the U.S. Army Reserves. He was elected as a Director of the Omaha Public Power District in 1968 and became Omaha’s mayor in 1937. As chairman of key sub-committees on the Agriculture and Foreign Relations Senate Committees, he received national recognition for sponsoring landmark legislation, and he was also known for his watchdog activity on behalf of the American taxpayer.
Edward passed away in 1987 at the age of 58.
