Project Proposal
Support from the CHS Foundation will provide the ELL staff with the funds necessary to build a leveled-reader library and literacy station activities, host Family Nights, participate in community events with the students, and provide students with picture dictionaries. These materials and experiences enhance the language-acquisition lessons already embedded in the school day to maximize all students’ academic progress and build the confidence needed to fully engage in their school and neighborhood communities.
Students Impacted
380 students per year.
Commitment to Closing the Opportunity Gap
Each ELL project funded through the CHS Foundation focuses on the different levels of language acquisition. These materials and experiences enrich the learning process through engaging materials such as the Oxford Picture Dictionaries, leveled readers, and first-language books. Family Nights allow the students and their parents to develop a greater sense of community and field trips allow the students to engage in cultural experiences that otherwise may not happen without the funding from this grant.
Translation to College and Career Readiness
These experiences and materials allow students to build not only their language skills but also their academic skills which empowers them to reach their full potential. Every language-building activity, from reading a story to visiting a local pumpkin patch builds confidence in their English skills and interpersonal communication. These materials are also important aids in the process of building the skills necessary to perform their best on the ACT which is required for many post-secondary institutions.
