August 27, 1964: Mary Poppins, starring Julie Andrews and Dick Van Dyke, premiered in Los Angeles
September 24, 1964: President Johnson announced increased military aid to South Vietnam in response to escalating conflict
October 1, 1964: The Tokyo Olympics began, becoming the first Games to be broadcast globally via satellite
October 14, 1964: Martin Luther King Jr. was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his leadership of the American Civil Rights Movement
November 3, 1964: Lyndon B. Johnson won the U.S. presidential election in a landslide against republican Barry Goldwater
December 4, 1964: The Beatles released Beatles for Sale in the U.K.
January 20, 1965: Lyndon B. Johnson was inaugurated for a full presidential term after defeating Barry Goldwater in the November 1964 election
January 24, 1965: Sir Winston Churchill died in London at the age of 90.
February 21, 1965: Malcolm X was assassinated while addressing the Organization of Afro-American Unity at the Audobon Ballroom in New York City.
March 8, 1965: The first U.S. combat troops landed at Da Nang in South Vietnam, marking the beginning of large-scale American military involvement.
March 25, 1965: The second march from Selma concluded with 25,000 demonstrators reaching Montgomery, where Dr. King delivered his “How long? Not long” speech at the state capitol
April 6, 1965: Intelstat I, also known as Early Bird, was launched into orbit. It became the first commercial communications satellite to provide transatlantic telephone and television signals.
May 11, 1965: The Rolling Stones recorded “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” at RCA studios in Hollywood
