Semrad spent his entire 32-year career at Central, serving as a teacher, state championship basketball coach and data-savvy administrator. Semrad was hired in 1973 as a social studies teacher and coach. As head coach of girls basketball, his 1983 and 1984 teams went 50-0, claimed back-to-back state championships and were inducted into the Nebraska Sports Hall of Fame. At one point, his teams won 58 straight games, still a Class A record. He also sponsored the student council and coached softball and baseball. Semrad became an assistant principal and school data administrator in 1989. One of his most important duties was putting together the master academic schedule. To solve that annual puzzle, he developed techniques still used by the school’s data administrator. He served as a mentor to both staff and students, and he is fondly remembered by his former players. He died in 2020.
